THE LION KING BRINGS THE JUNGLE TO NYP/WEILL-CORNELL

On Friday, February 17th the Columbia University Program in Physical Therapy brought a little jungle boogie to the kids at New York-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center. Fairytale Physical Therapy (FTPT) brought Timon, Pumba, Simba and all the rest from “The Lion King Show” to get the kids dancing during these cold winter months.

Fairytale Physical Therapy (FTPT) is a student-run project of the Columbia University Program in Physical Therapy.  Their abbreviated versions of popular Disney productions offer a chance for kids to get moving and for parents and children to take a break from being in the hospital. The shows feature choreography with a therapeutic exercise slant. The cast wears make-up and full costumes. There is interactive storytelling and lots of singing. Laughing along the whole time, kids learned dances to “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” and “Hakuna Matata.” The kids are encouraged to participate in the story and dance along from standing or seated positions.  The shows are broadcast to hospital rooms for those who can't make it to where the show is taking place,

This is the thirteenth show that Fairytale Physical Therapy has brought to local hospitals. Previous productions include “The Little Mermaid” and “Frozen”. This production featured the second year class of DPT students: Chase Barhorst as Simba, Seth McChesney as Scar, Jeff Bellanich as Mufasa, Jenna Kantor as Timon, Maria Muto as Pumba, Shannon Joyner as Zasu/ Narrator and Jackie Franzak, Nicole Schlobach and Lailah Farmer as dancing hyenas. Mari Arnaud, a second year Occupational Therapy student, was the creator for the arts and crafts portion which takes place after the show.

The Fairytale Physical Therapy team reports that they had lots of fun in the jungle and are looking forward to bringing more shows to the local hospitals for the upcoming winter season!" You can contact FTPT at fairytalephysicaltherapy@gmail.com.
