On February 20, 2018, DPT students, faculty, lab instructors and two groups of children gathered for the first of two annual Kids Days. Kids Day is an opportunity for DPT students in PT Management of Pediatric Conditions, co-directed by Drs. Lisa Yoon and Wing Fu, to observe, perform and analyze results of various tests and measures on actual kids, all under the supervision of DPT faculty and lab instructors.
Two lively groups of children participated, one consisting of ages 6 to 13, supervised by Dr. Fu, and one for infants and toddlers, supervised by Dr. Yoon.
Dr. Yoon explained, “During Kid’s Day 1, students have an opportunity to learn from the smallest and cutest teachers around. The day solidifies the first third of the pediatric curricular content through experiences with children developing typically. Students learn how to interact with the kids and administer common tests and measures with a dose of creativity and fun.”
The students agreed. Kayla Coutts, CUDPT 2019, said “I experienced the need to meet kids on their level, whether tired or ecstatic, or interested in dolls or balls, in order to accomplish your goals for the child.”
“At Kids Day 1 we revisited our youth with a new perspective by applying our newly acquired clinical lens.” added James Sinodinos, CUDPT 2019. “This was both fun and educational!”
Morgan White, CUDPT 2019, commented, “Kid’s Day was a great opportunity to practice our communication skills with ‘patients’ that have no idea what we are talking about, or are not yet able to verbally communicate at all!”
Dr. Fu summed it up, “Students get to learn and practice the essential skills in pediatric physical therapy with real children and parents. The children enjoyed it too—many of them expressed the desire to come back next year!”
By all appearances, it looked like a good time was had by all!
