Dr. Jean Fitzpatrick Timmerberg, the Chair of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) Student Readiness Task Panel, presented the results of a study entitled “Physical Therapist Student Readiness for Entrance into the First Full-time Clinical Experience: A Delphi Study” at the Physical Therapy Educational Leadership Conference that was held in Columbus, OH this October. The article is currently under review by the Physical Therapy Journal.
Results from the study were used to put forth a motion during the ACAPT Board Meeting, that ACAPT adopt the minimal knowledge, skills, and abilities list with the corresponding level of proficiency. Students should demonstrate competency in these items prior to entrance into the first full-time clinical education experience.
The motion was passed. The research team will now be looking at another point along the continuum of learning: entrance into practice.
